Joinery

Metal

In many cases engineers require either surface mounted or hidden steel fasteners in the joinery of beams. More often than not these are custom designed and manufactured products. Timbershoppe has an in house fabrication facility specifically for production of unique brackets and joinery plates.

Steel plates and bolts are often used to meet both structural and aesthetic needs in commercial construction. We custom design gusset plates, joist hangers and column connections reminiscent of traditional heavy timber structures. Any number of materials can be provided from Steel to Aluminum or Stainless and Wrought Iron.

Heavy Architectural Timber

Traditional joinery relies upon the inherent strength of wood. Joints are lovingly notched not only to provide strong structural connections, but also to aid in the visual appeal of heavy timber elements. These joints are valuable, visual sales tools in assisting Builders, Developers and Architects to convince potential clients of the merits of this particular building style.

Correct joinery involves the cutting of notches into wood that will mate one element to another. These pieces will be held by gravity, tension, compression or use of a wood peg.

A selection of the joinery methods that we use include the,

  • Lap joint,
  • Half-lap,
  • Mortise and tenon,
  • Dovetail lap joint,
  • Scarf joint,
  • Wedged dovetail

We also offer a variety of bird's mouths, or a variation of each joint, but with housed seats.

The Hundegger automated cutting system is used for machine cut Timber Frames. It produces extremely accurate joints in a multitude of configurations.
